On this week’s show, we show off one of our favorite new toys: Wireless Sensor Tags. It might be the most boring product name ever, but at least it’s descriptive — you attach these little tags to various objects around your house, and they send an alert when the on-board sensors detect whatever it is you want to measure: changes in light, specific movements, or when the cat or child you’ve attached them to wanders out of Wi-Fi range. Roberto’s been testing them along with the companion smartphone app, and he gives us a preliminary report.
Also, Alexandra tells us about a mobile web browser called UC. The tiny browser — one of the most popular web browsers on Chinese and Indian smartphones — is making a play in the West, and Alexandra is testing the alpha build. Lastly, we spend a minute browsing Facebook with the company’s newly redesigned iOS apps.
Programming note: The big talking point right now is the outcome of the Apple v. Samsung trial, but the verdict dropped at the end of the day on Friday, August 24. We shoot the show earlier than that, so we missed the opportunity to talk about the court’s decision on this week’s program. We’ll pick up the news on the next show.
