Libra for Android helps you track your weight using The Hacker's Diet system

I'm getting fat; that's what you see on the screenshot to the right -- my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you've ever read The Hacker's Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you're gaining or losing weight.

When I use my "main" PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I've had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It's a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker's Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day's weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today's weight (as they're usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you're not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.

Virgin Mobile to start selling the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S from today

Virgin Mobile USA owned by Sprint Nextel Corp, will start selling the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S on its pre-paid network starting from today. Announced earlier this month, Virgin Mobile will become the second pre-paid network to offer the iPhone on its network after Cricket also announced that it would carry the iPhone starting on June 22^nd.

Virgin Mobile will carry the iPhone 4 8GB version for an upfront cost of $549. The iPhone 4S is the entry level 16GB version with a price point of $649. You then have a choice of three plans with varying talk minutes from $30 - $50. All plans include unlimited SMS messaging and unlimited data with a fair usage allowance set at 2.5 GB.

“We think there’s good demand for high-end devices like the iPhone in the prepaid market,” Sprint Chief Executive Officer Dan Hesse said in an interview. “There’s a misperception that the prepaid market is only for people that are economically challenged. That’s not the case. Our expectation, based on preorders, is that the iPhone will do very well on Virgin.”

Virgin Mobile will use the interest generated by the iPhone to promote the opening of ten retail stores, starting in Chicago tomorrow. The stores signify a change in direction for Virgin Mobile who previously relied upon other stores like RadioShack and Best Buy to promote its offerings.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

U.S. Cellular pledges to carry Windows Phone 8 devices in the fall

U.S. Cellular has confirmed to PC Mag that it's "excited" by the prospect of carrying Windows Phone 8 handsets when they land later this year. A PR person even went as far as saying that WP8 "will be an important part of our lineup." The move leaves Sprint, Cricket and MetroPCS as the only major-league holdouts for the new platform -- or perhaps their PR departments just aren't as bubbly.

Google Announces Chrome Browser for iOS, Coming to iPhone Today

The Chrome browser won’t be limited to Android devices and desktop computers anymore. At its annual I/O conference Thursday, Google announced that Chrome is headed to iOS, and will be available on the iPhone later today, in fact.

The Chrome app will provide much of what you would expect from the browser, such as its incognito mode for browsing without leaving a digital trail in your history or cookie buckets. The mobile browser will also offer synchronization across devices, so you can keep bookmarks, settings, and open tabs synced among your desktop and iOS products.

Both Safari and Chrome are based on the open source WebKit browser engine. But for the mobile app, Google was required to use Apple’s version of Webkit (UIWebView) as the Javascript engine and for rendering in order to comply with Apple’s terms. Chrome also doesn’t get to use Mobile Safari’s Nitro Javascript engine, so Chrome may end up running noticeably slower than Apple’s built-in browser.

A Google representative told Wired: “Our goal was to bring the same fast, secure and stable web browsing experience you’ve come to enjoy when using Chrome on your desktop or Android device, while also adapting to platform specific technical specifications. Rendering and the javascript engine are provided by iOS through UIWebView.”

Safari will remain the default browser on iOS, but for many, the option of Chrome will be a welcome change. Other iOS browser options currently include Yahoo’s Axis visual search app, Opera Mini and Dolphin Browser.

Chrome first arrived as a beta on the Android operating system in February.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

Google Chrome 11 -- which just recently made the move to the browser's beta channel -- has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second -- Web Navigation Extension -- is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions -- like Traffic Light -- to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you'll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we're not aware of any examples just yet, however. We'll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You're then presented with two further choices -- a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There's no winning or losing, really. Each "game" usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it's a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you're at it.
